Cancun

Cancun, is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world and has a year-round tropical climate. This Mexican resort offers vacationers water sports galore, as well as great night entertainment that goes on till wee hours. Furthermore you can find excellent accommodations, great restaurants, and outstanding shopping. Cancun is one of the east coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo which is composed of many lagoons, sandbars, and mangrove swamps, and is edged with coral reefs. Several islands lie off shore like Cozumel, Isla Mujeres and Isla Holbox. The fifth larger reef in the world, the Belize Reef, extends from the tip of Isla Mujeres 250 kilometers south of the bay of Honduras. Many variety of coral-including rare black coral are found in the deep reef that protects the state area called Quintana Roo.

Until the 1970s, the economy of Quintana Roo was very small scaled. Coconuts and fishing were the only natural resources in this area that fueled the small scale economy. Later, with the development of a mega offshore sandbar into a multimillion dollar resort, tourism became the major economic moneymaker and made Cancun one of Mexico's most popular resorts. Construction is still continuing south along the coast. Other naturally attractive sites south are home to modern hotels and there is still more earmarked for future development. There are talks about another international airport as well as a marina and a new 18-hole golf course. New built roads give access to previously unknown beaches and unseen Maya structures.

Cancun Island is approximately 16 miles long with the highest point above sea level being 200 feet. The State of Quintana Roo is located 550 miles south of Miami, in the South-eastern part of Mexico. Along the coastline of about 540 miles, there are numerous coral islands and a reef barrier, the second largest in the world.

The weather in Quintana Roo falls into a a dry season from November to April and a wet season from May to October. Though most travelers prefer the milder conditions of the dry season, you can enjoy the area any time of the year. In the dry season you can expect hot days, cooling showers and occasional brief storms. Travel in the wet season can be more difficult, with regular rains and hot, muggy air. May and June are infamous in the Yucatan for heat of around 90°F and humidity about 90 percent.
